What is a typical Timeline for a Personal Injury Case

By James H. 10/22/2022

There are many different types of personal injury cases. Some of the most common are car accidents, slip and fall accidents, dog bites, and product liability cases.

Car accidents are the most common type of personal injury case. They can occur for a variety of reasons, such as speeding, driving under the influence, or driving while distracted.
Slip and fall accidents are also common. They can occur when someone slips on a wet floor, falls down a flight of stairs, or trips over a hazardous object.
Dog bites are also common. They can occur when a dog attacks someone, or when someone is bitten by a dog that is not properly restrained.
and Product liability cases. They can occur when a defective product causes an injury, such as a car accident caused by a faulty airbag.

The following is a general guide to the sequence of events in a typical personal injury case. Please remember that each case is unique and the specific timeline may vary depending on the facts and circumstances of your case.

  1. The injured person contacts an attorney.
  2. The attorney reviews the facts of the case and decides whether to take the case.
  3. If the attorney decides to take the case, the attorney will file a lawsuit on behalf of the injured person.
  4. The defendant will then file a response to the lawsuit.
  5. The parties will then begin to exchange discovery documents.
  6. The parties will then attend a settlement conference.
  7. If the case does not settle at the settlement conference, the case will go to trial.
  8. The parties will then present their evidence and arguments to the court.
  9. The court will then issue a ruling on the case.
